The founder, Beatrice Alexander, began producing her famous Madame Alexander dolls in 1923, having developed an interest in dolls at a young age in her father’s doll shop and doll hospital. Originally produced specfically for children, they are now collected by people of all ages. The dolls are modeled after Dickens characters, celebrities, and fictional characters such as Scarlett O’Hara, Alice in Wonderland and Little Women. Adored for their big round eyes, gorgeous costumes and delicate features, these outstanding dolls are absolutely stunning. They are definitely one of the best collectible dolls available today.

The first dolls produced by Madame Alexander had cloth faces which were flat and hand painted. Manufacture of composition dolls commenced in the 1930s, even though the cloth dolls were still in demand. Beatrice Alexander is well known for her exquisite costumes just as much as she is for her dolls. Both female and male dolls have the same face and body which is very unique. Following the end of World War II, Madame Alexander was one of the first companies to make plastic dolls. The prestigious Fashion Academy Gold medal for excellence in costuming was awarded to Madame Alexander in the 1950s. Several of the Madame Alexander dolls continued to be produced for over 40 years with minimal changes.
