What should I need to start snorkeling?

Tom K asked:

Hey, last summer I went to Mexico and went snorkeling; instantly falling in love with it. Now I’m curious, what supplies/gear would I need to start doing this as a hobby? Price isn’t an issue, so it would be helpful if you also recommend brands as well.

First, you’ll need a snorkel and mask. I would highly recommend scuba quality snorkel and mask. I would go to a local scuba diving shop and purchase them from there. You will be able to try on a bunch of different masks. Everyone’s face is shaped differently; therefore, fit is everything. I would avoid the CostCo/Sams Club snorkeling set.

Second, while not really required to snorkel, fins do make it easier. Here you have an option. Scuba diving fins will work, but they tend to be larger, and if you will ever only be doing snorkeling then it might be a little bit of an overkill. With that said, while snorkeling, I can dive deeper and faster with my scuba fins than I can with snorkeling fins.

    Create a video blog

    You will need a
    Snorkel
    Mask
    Fin
    and a gear bag

    Basic accessories would be a
    Anti-fog spray
    Mask
    Gloves
    Boots
    Rash Guard or a shortie
    Snorkeling Vest,

If you are going to this more often you will probably want to get,

    Dry-box (to hold your stuff)
Safety equipment like a whistle, Signal tube, sun and insect (jellyfish)protection, Knife, light first aid kit, ear dryer,

But I would suggest you start with the basic sand then keep adding to your equipment,

Most Suppliers offer snorkeling package like Leisure Pro

The common brands are Cressi-Sub - Tusa - Mares - XS Scuba

Leisure Pro also post a guide to buy snorkels,

Enjoy the snorkeling and before you know it you will be a certified diver
