Beginner oil painting supplies?

JC asked:

My dad is wanting to try his hand at oil painting, so I thought I’d buy him some supplies to get him started for Christmas. I’m not exactly sure what to buy him since this is not my cup of tea. I have bought a smaller boxed set of oil paint while they were on sale at Hobby Lobby. I thought I’d buy him a canvas or two. Is there any kind of book that has paper in it for oil painting? Please give me a list of supplies that he would need to start!
Thanks!!!

Oil painting is best done on something that has been primed, so if you are going to buy canvas for him, make sure that you buy some sort of primer for it as well. Gesso is my personal favourite. If you would like something cheaper than canvas that is still very good for painting, you could try hardboard. You can get this from your local hardware store, and it costs less than $10 per sheet for a fairly good size.

He’ll also need a variety of good quality brushes in different shapes and sizes. You might want to consider the length of the brushes, too.

In addition to the small boxed set of paints that you have purchased, you should get him a larger tube of a mixing white. A large tube of titanium white would be good. You’ll also need to get him different oil paint media to help him out. A simple mix to use is liquin and odourless mineral spirits. You might also want to pick up some cobalt drier or something similar so that he can work more quickly.

He’ll need a pallet, which can be something simple like an inexpensive baking pan. I like to use the ones that have sides on them. He will need some pallet knives to go with that, too. Make sure to get metal ones rather than plastic, as they will work better and last a lot longer.

A roll of masking tape will be helpful, as will a big pile of rags.

Hope that helps give you a starting idea of some things that you can find!
